For those people who suffer from migraines daily, we are
all too familiar with the debilitating effects of migraines. The intense
throbbing, and sensitivity to light coupled with nausea and vomiting,
migraine headaches are the worst of its kind.
A migraine headache causes intense throbbing sensation in
one area of the head, usually above the eyes or ears. Migraine sufferers
generally look for quiet dark places to rest, due to the extreme
sensitivity to light. Migraines are persistent and do not respond to
pain killers like aspirin. Migraines are meant to be managed and can go
on for hours and sometimes days. Many patients who suffer from migraines
report that sleeping increases the pulsating pain rather than reducing
it.
Migraines are sometimes preceded by pulsating pain in the arms and legs, random blackouts and flashes of light.
Migraines are peculiar headaches that lack a single
treatment plan. Patient usually report on various methods to manage the
headache, using various types of medication and lifestyle changes.
Although there isn’t a single pill that is known to treat migraines,
everyday pain killers do help reduce the intensity of the headache.
Although little is known about the cause of a migraine
headache, environmental triggers and genetics are contributing factors.
There is very little research done on the cause and reasons behind
migraines, but preliminary research has shown that changes with the
interactions between the brainstem and the trigeminal nerve may be a
cause. It is said that women are more prone to migraines than men are,
and usually experience an episode shortly before or during menstruation,
when oestrogen levels are low in a woman’s body. Other chemical
imbalances may be a factor as well, including fluctuating serotonin
levels; a chemical that regulates your mood and nervous systems.
Depression is a common symptom amongst those who suffer from migraine
headaches, a result of a lack of serotonin in the body.
Migraines usually have four stages of progression though
you may not necessarily experience all of these. Irritability,
depression, hyperactivity, and you may experience a pulsating or
tingling ache in the arms and legs. The aura stage brings about visual
disturbances of blackouts and light flashes. Most people experience this
simultaneously with the attack itself. The main attack is what
incapacitates patients into dark quiet rooms. Light and noise have
excruciating effects on patients who suffer from migraines. The last and
final stage is the postdrome stage that leaves patients feeling tired
and drained out. Some patients however, feel slightly euphoric and
rejuvenated after an episode.
More than 50% of migraine sufferers are never diagnosed and
therefore do not seek treatment other than personal management of the
condition. Migraine headache have been categorized under progressive
disabilities in some western countries, due its debilitating effects.
